National Law School of India University was established in Bangalore in 1987 after joint efforts from the Judiciary, the Bar Council of India, the Karnataka Bar Council, the Bangalore University and the Government of Karnataka. The main purpose was to reform legal education and research in India.
The National Law School was established with a view to cater to the requirements of the legal profession, law teaching and research, and judiciary in the state. The Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of the University. The Chairman, Bar Council of India, is the Chairman of the General Council.
Since 1991, it is a fully residential university on one campus with three Halls of Residence for men, three Halls of Residence for women, two Hostels for post-graduate women students, three blocks for Faculty Quarters and two blocks for non-teaching staff Quarters besides the Academic Block.
Since its inception, the University has grown from strength to strength. Many students have been selected by prestigious universities abroad for higher studies while many are successful lawyers and advicates in courts across India and even in the Supreme Court.
The National Law School also has exchange programmes with the National University of Singapore, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Canada and Buceuius Law School, Germany.
Apart from offering regular graduation and postgraduation courses, the Law School offers a Master’s Degree programme in Business Laws, and Post-Graduate Diploma programmes in Human Rights Law, Environmental Law, Medical Law and Ethics, Intellectual Property Law and Child Rights Law through its Distance Education Department.
The Law School has made web-based legal education and interaction a reality and is moving towards setting up a Digital Library of its collections as part of the Open Access Initiative, and efforts are on to provide open and world-wide access to all law related source documents.
NLSIU offers One-Year LL.M. Degree programme in two distinct and separate Branches of specialization: (i) Business Laws and (ii) Human Rights Laws. Candidates have an option to join either. T
Candidates who have an LL.M. Degree (regular mode) from a recognized University securing an aggregate of 55% marks or its equivalent grade (50% of marks or its equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/SAP) are eligible to apply.

LL.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six year
University Library
The University library also known as Sri Narayana Rao Memorial National Law Library was established with the assistance of Mrs. Sudha Narayanamurthy of INFOSYS. It has a collection of over 70,000 volumes (Books - 50,000 and Journals - 20,000) covering a wide range of general and special subjects, comprising of textbooks, reference books, back volumes of journals and reports etc., apart from current legal periodicals.
The NLSIU Library has also established links with other important libraries in and around Bangalore in order to provide inter-library access for the benefit of students and teachers of the Law School. To assist the students and research scholars in locating literature as well as information in their areas of research, general reference, current awareness and computerized catalogues have been introduced. An orientation programme is also organised for new students to help them acquaint themselves with the library system and services and for enabling maximum utilisation of the available resources.
