Education Profile of Karnataka

Karnataka which has a rich heritage and culture is also one of the most important states when it comes to education. It is one of the major educational hubs of our country. The state has witnessed an increase in the literacy rate in the last decade, climbing from a mere 66.64 per cent to an impressive 75.60 per cent. This has been possible due to the improvement in the primary education sector of the state. It also has some of the best higher education institutes of the country which witnesses students not only from all over the country but also from abroad. 

School Education in Karnataka

Like other states of India, Karnataka also follows the 10 2 system. Karnataka has several schools that provide basic education at the primary and secondary levels. The number of primary schools include 23,690 while that of secondary schools are 8, 216. There are vernacular medium as well as English medium schools. Schools are mostly affiliated to CBSE, ICSE board. The government schools are affiliated to the state board. Some schools in Bengaluru follow IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) syllabus as well. Vidya Niketan, Valley School, Cambridge International School and Jain Heritage School are some of the reputed schools of Bengaluru. Mangaluru too has some of the country’s best schools which include Sacred Heart High School, St Lawrence Higher Primary School and Besant National Girls High School. 

Higher Education in Karnataka

Karnataka has a solid reputation for higher education in the country. With one central university, 24 public universities, 15 deemed universities, 10 private universities, 207 engineering colleges, 61 medical colleges, Karnataka is the student’s first choice for higher education. It also has 48 dental colleges, 280 management institutions as well as. Polytechnics, Pharmacy, Yoga, Fashion Designs, and Homeopathy colleges are also present here. Bangalore University, Kuvempu University, Mysore University, Mangalore University, Gulbarga University, and Karnatak University. Deemed universities such as Christ University, Manipal University also exist. Apart from these, there is the Visvesvaraya Technological University which oversees many of the engineering colleges in the state. Agricultural science is also a popular course here which is offered by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. The state has set up a Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University at Bidar. Other universities established by the state government are Karnataka State Open University, Kannada University, and Karnataka Women University. Manipal University which is privately run is extremely popular among students in India and abroad. It offers courses in medical, engineering and dental. Karnataka has many deemed universities like NITK, NIHMANS etc.
