Karnataka Folklore University

Karnataka Folklore University was established in 2011 with a specific objective of providing the greater platform in Folklore Studies. It is the dream child of the the then Chief Minister Shri B.S. Yediyurappa. It is also known as Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya. It is the only university in the whole of Asia providing advanced teaching, learning and research opportunities to students of folklore. Establishment of this university has certainly added a new dimension to higher education in Karnataka, worthy of emulation by other linguistic states of India, as the next frontier of inclusive studies of Kannada culture.

Karnataka has a rich folklore and cultural heritage. The University is involved in collecting data, documenting the knowledge system and understanding the contextual importance of the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka. This collection, preservation and conservation of Folk elements need highly professional stream of academicians who can transform such thoughts into practices. 

Only graduates with high skills are able to admire and preserve this heritage. Realising the need for this the Government of Karnataka established the folklore university. The University gives a scope to the students to conduct advanced Research in the field of Folkloristics.

Objectives

Some of the important objectives of the University are:
  • To provide for higher education and research in all the subjects of folklore, literature, art, music, theatre, handicrafts, folk medicine, food, beverage, cottage industries etc., of Karnataka. 
     
  • To provide an opportunity for the study of the culture of Kannada speaking and other Dravidian languages speaking people and culture of the people and culture of the people speaking other languages. 

  •  To provide for the study heritage of the indigenous/traditional knowledge with the awareness that “Indigenous culture is not monolithic but redemptively pluralistic”. 
     
  • To assist in the development of all neglected rural communities and tribes of Karnataka.

  • To strengthen the indigenous culture to face the challenges of globalization effectively.

  • To study folklore on multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary base and to promote research at higher levels. 

  • To make a comparative study of the folklore of different languages and communities of Karnataka.

University Library

The University Library began with the establishment in the name of G Shampa Library of the Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya in 2012 and is well equipped with a rich stock of books to meet the intellectual and academic needs of both students and staff. The library subscribes to an adequate number of journals and magazines, daily newspapers which brings the most up-to-date developments in folklore, technology, Arts, Science and Social Sciences. Currently, the library has more than 12000 books of different disciplines.
