Central Institute of Indian Languages

The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) was established by the Government of India in 1969 which functions as a subordinate office for the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education.

CIIL is recognised within and outside the country for carrying out and supporting extensive research and publication on Indian languages. The Institute also offers an innovative programme with an objective to promote multilingualism among the citizens of this country and thereby promote national integrity and social harmony.

Aims and Objectives of CIIL

Advices and Assists Central as well as State Governments in the matters of language.
Contributes to the development of all Indian Languages by creating content and corpus.
Protects and Documents Minor, Minority and Tribal Languages.
Promotes Linguistic harmony by teaching 15 Indian languages to non-native learners.

Center for Material production, Testing and Evaluation

This research group under the center was established to fulfill the objectives of developing teaching texts in Indian Languages as well as for production of additional reading materials. This group under the center conducts fundamental research on proficiency testing, learning evaluation, performance measurements, education techniques, etc., with reference to language and literature of all Indian languages.

The group has been engaged in developing basic reference materials on terminology, bibliography and approaches to different kinds of evaluation. To meet different requirements in Indian languages, the group has created database on test contents, test methods, test purposes which includes a variety of item types in language and literature with quality indices for different purposes and levels in different contexts.

Regional Centres of CIIL

The Institute has five Regional Centers imparting instruction in 15 Indian languages. It also has two additional centers devoted exclusively for Urdu teaching and research. Each center has a principal, relevant faculty members and supporting administrative and technical staff.

CIIL Library

The Institute has highly developed Technical Library. It is conceived as a multi-media center with printed books, microfische cards, microfilms and other media materials. It has a collection of nearly 63,500 volumes and 250 journals in and on Indian languages, linguistics and allied subjects. It has 12,564 micro fische cards, 850 micro films, cassettes & films.

CIIL Courses

10-month Diploma programme in Language Education

The Institute offers 10-month Diploma programme in Language Education in any one of the Modern Indian Languages viz. Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu at the Seven Regional Language Centres situated at Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Lucknow, Mysuru, Patiala, Pune and Solan.

Eligibility and Essential Qualifications:

General

The applicant should not have any formal degree, native/nativised proficiency or informal knowledge in the language applied for.
The applicants should not have been trained in any of the languages at the Regional Language Centres or have discontinued or have been terminated from the RLCs.
The applicants can select a language from the list provided in the above Table.
The applicants should select the language they want to learn carefully as change in the language choice is not permissible after joining the course.
Preference of language should be clearly mentioned in the application. Otherwise, seats will be allotted according to the vacancies available in the Regional Language Centres.

For In-service Teachers

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a minimum of three years teaching experience in a High School (from VI to X standard) in Government/Fully Government-aided schools.
Applicants having an equivalent qualification to M.A. classical language must produce a “Qualification Equivalent Certificate” from DEO.
The applicants should preferably be a regular faculty; if temporary, the applicant must produce a certificate that she/he is likely to continue in the same position/profession.
For Prospective Teachers/Research Scholars i. A Bachelors or Masters degree in Education (B.Ed./M.Ed) or . Ph.D completed or Ph.D pursuing scholars or iii. NET/SET/SLET/TET qualified candidates
